The Leading Scholar Award recognizes students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and scholarly achievements both in and outside the classroom.
The opportunity: This scholarship program is open to first-year students enrolling in fall 2010. As a part of the selection process, approximately 40 finalists will be invited to campus in December for the final portion of the competition. During this opportunity students will visit with University administrators, faculty, and students.
The resident value: Three Michigan resident students will be awarded scholarships equivalent to regular full-time tuition, plus room and board and a stipend of $1,000 each year. In addition, 27 in-state students will receive $8,000 per year.
The out-of-state value: Three out-of-state students will receive a value equivalent to regular full-time nonresident tuition. In addition, 7 out-of-state students will receive $17,000 per year. Students receiving the Leading Scholar Award are not eligible to receive the National Scholars Program Award, the Alumni Legacy Award, or the Military Family Education Award
Length: The awards cover four years (eight semesters) of study. Recipients must maintain a minimum 3.25 cumulative Grade Point Average to have the award renewed for the second, third, and fourth years.

Determination of Award: Selection of finalists is made by the University Scholarship Committee by November 15. Award recipients will be notified by January 1.
