Attention stage right—you can be in the spotlight as a theatre and entertainment technology major at Michigan Tech! With the integration of studies in engineering technology and strong foundations in the arts, you will become a well-educated professional who blends solid technical expertise with innovation, artistry, and creativity as a theatre and entertainment technology major. Upon graduation, you’ll be qualified to fill entry-level backstage positions in the entertainment industry. You will be working with theatrical productions, multi-media concerts, theme parks, elaborate corporate events, and half-time extravaganzas at sporting events.

Before you get ready to plunge into your theatre and entertainment technology career, here are a few things you should know about the program…

  • You’ll do research in costume, lighting, or scenic design for mainstage productions.
  • You will assist faculty members in workshop preparations with the potential for student work on faculty grants.
  • You will take significant courses in technology and computing to learn to adapt your training to non-theatrical entertainment career fields.
  • You’ll have an educational focus not only on traditional theatre but also on other career fields in entertainment such as corporate events, theme parks, theme retail, and museums.
  • Your computer lab is equipped with entertainment-dedicated programs.
  • You will develop your skills in high tech training at performance venues such as the beautiful Rozsa Center and traditional McArdle Theatre.

Being a theatre and entertainment technology major means you’ll be involved in a curriculum that has a very practical, life-skills approach. You will graduate with significant production experience, which can lead to careers at companies like Disney or Electronic Theatre Controls (ETC). Start your career as an assistant designer, as a member of a road crew for theatrical touring companies, on Las Vegas-style shows, as a member of theme park/cruise ship production crews, or as a theatre in-house crew member.
