Software Engineering

If you’ve ever created computer programs as a hobby and thought that it would be cool to take it up a notch and develop software, then the software engineering program at Michigan Tech is what you’re looking for! Software engineering focuses on the study and practice of techniques for the development and maintenance of large-scale software products. You will study factors relating to the reliability, usability, and cost-effectiveness of software. You’ll also gain domain knowledge in an applications area such as business, science, health, or even computer games.

Software engineers are highly sought after by corporations developing safety-critical software in the transportation, medical and defense industries. How inspiring is it to know that your software could save lives? Software engineers are also sought out by a wide range of industries that develop in-house software.  Ready to develop the next hot video game?

Put your classroom skills into practice by working part-time in the local area with international corporations like GE Aviation and Ford Motor Company.  These companies hire Michigan Tech students to fill critical positions in their IT areas.

Before you get ready to plunge into your software engineering career, here are a few things you should know about the program…

  • We have coordinated with the psychology department to offer a human factors lab for education and research.
  • You’ll have the chance to compete in the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest—we’ve had teams compete in the World Finals in Prague and Shanghai.
  • You can get free help on your assignments or work for the Computer Science Learning Center. There are excellent opportunities for co-ops and summer internships both locally and nationally.
  • Department equipment is primarily Linux based—even your introductory courses will include material on Linux systems.

There are also over 20 other enterprise teams that software engineering majors can join. Computers and special-purpose software is an integral component of many of the enterprise projects.
