Computer Systems Science

Do you love to learn about effective computing environments, concepts of networking, or the security of computer systems? If you answered yes, then the computer systems science degree at Michigan Tech is the perfect fit for you! Computer systems science focuses on the computing environment, particularly issues below the user level with the goal of providing users with a secure, efficient, cost-effective computing environment that meets the needs of the whole user community. 

Computer systems science will also provide you with a solid theoretical and practical foundation in all aspects of computer systems including operating systems, networking, administration, performance analysis, and security. Many computer systems science graduates go on to work in areas of computer system architecture or IT management in nearly all types of industrial, educational and government institutions. 

Put your classroom skills into practice by working part-time in the local area with international corporations like GE Aviation and Ford Motor Company.  These companies hire Michigan Tech students to fill critical positions in their IT areas.

Before you get ready to plunge into your computer systems science career, here are a few things you should know about the program…

  • The computer science department has cooperated with the psychology department to equip a human factors lab for education and research.
  • You’ll have the chance to compete in the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest—we’ve had teams compete in the World Finals in Prague and Shanghai.
  • There are excellent opportunities for co-ops and summer internships both locally and nationally.
  • Department equipment is primarily Linux based—even your introductory courses will include material on Linux systems.
  • Get free help on your assignments or work for the Computer Science Learning Center.
  • Computer labs are available to you 24 hours a day, including wireless access throughout most of campus…one of the top 10 wired campuses in the country.

As a computer systems science major, you can also get involved with the Husky Game Development Enterprise. It’s a group of team members who focus on designing, developing, and marketing video games. There are also over 20 other enterprise teams that computer systems science majors can join. Computers and special-purpose software is an integral component of many of the enterprise projects.
