Do you dream of designing video games or working in areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, computer architecture, operating systems, mobile computing, networking, or software engineering? So do computer science majors at Michigan Tech. But, what's even better is that they don't just dream about it...they do it!
At Michigan Tech you’ll be exposed to research equipment such as 3D stereoscopic projection systems, virtual reality systems, mobile robots, and several high-end clusters. The goal of our computer science program is to provide you with an education that will serve you immediately upon graduation as well as provide the foundation for life-long learning in an extremely dynamic field.
Put your classroom skills into practice by working part-time in the local area with international corporations like GE Aviation and Ford Motor Company. These companies hire Michigan Tech students to fill critical positions in their IT areas.
And if you’re coming to Michigan Tech knowing that you want to do something with computers, but are uncertain about your ultimate career objectives, that’s not a problem. The computer science program allows you to take two years to determine if you want computer science, software engineering, or computer systems science as your major—and you’ll still be able to graduate in four years.
As a computer science major you can concentrate in:
- Computer Science
- Information Systems
- Software Engineering
- Applications
- Computer Science Education
Before you get ready to plunge into your computer science career, here are a few things you should know about the program…
- The computer science department has cooperated with the psychology department to equip a human factors lab for education and research.
- You’ll have the chance to compete in the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest—we’ve had teams compete in the World Finals in Prague and Shanghai.
- There are excellent opportunities for co-ops and summer internships both locally and nationally.
- You can get free help on your assignments or work for the Computer Science Learning Center.
- Department equipment is primarily Linux based—even your introductory courses will include material on Linux systems.
- Computer labs are available to you 24 hours a day, including wireless access throughout most of campus…one of the top 10 wired campuses in the country.
As a computer science major, you can also get involved with the Husky Game Development Enterprise. It’s a group of team members who focus on designing, developing, and marketing video games. There are also over 20 other enterprise teams that computer science majors can join. Computers and special-purpose software is an integral component of many of the enterprise projects.
