Clinical Laboratory Science

Clinical laboratory science (CLS), also known as medical technology, is a rapidly growing degree program at Michigan Tech. While we have one of the largest CLS programs in Michigan, we consistently offer specialty courses with smaller-sized lecture and lab sections. As a CLS major, you will gain a solid foundation in the basic sciences, as well select from a comprehensive collection of clinical courses including clinical lab techniques, microbiology, medical bacteriology, immunology, clinical lab quality assurance and management, clinical chemistry, hematology, blood banking, mycology, and parasitology. Sounds intriguing, doesn’t it?

As a clinical laboratory science major you can customize your degree by selecting one of these options:

  • 3+1 or 4+1 Clinical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology
  • 3+1 or 4+1 Cytotechnology
  • 3+1 or 4+1 Histotechnology
  • 4+1 Teacher certification

But before you get ready to plunge into your clinical laboratory science career, here are a few things you should know about the program…

  • You’ll engage in hands-on research as part of your curriculum…your last year of education will be a clinical practicum.
  • You’ll receive strong personal advising by CLS faculty.
  • A national shortage of CLS personnel means there are great job opportunities once you graduate.
  • The internship/clinical practicum option means you’ll intern at accredited hospital laboratories nation-wide.
  • You can get free help on your assignments or work for the Biological Sciences Learning Center.
  • You’ll take a full spectrum of clinical courses which means lots of hands-on laboratory work.

As our national health care sector continues to grow, you’ll be bombarded with advancement opportunities once you graduate and while you’re finishing your required clinical practicum. Our CLS graduates work in and direct hospital and clinic laboratories. If you’re looking for a degree that will help you to take the initiative and make a difference in medical care, the CLS degree is definitely one that will get you where you want to go.
