You were always the last kid to leave the sand box—you just couldn’t get enough. Now that you’re older, you still love to build things, perhaps just on a larger scale. Civil engineering at Michigan Tech is for people who have a passion to learn how to plan, design, build, and manage the facilities that are essential to society. Civil engineers are problem solvers who aren’t afraid of challenges. Your daily tasks could put you in front of a computer, at a job site, or at a team meeting giving a presentation. By studying at Michigan Tech you’ll be prepared for whatever comes your way. You’ll earn your degree by doing extensive hands-on lab work with state-of-the-art equipment and computer labs available to you whenever you need them.
As a civil engineering major you can concentrate in:
- Construction
- Environmental Engineering
- Geotechnical Engineering
- Structural Engineering
- Transportation
- Water resources
Before you get ready to plunge into your civil engineering career, here are a few things you should know about the program…
- You can take part in research projects like performance characteristics of small scale drinking water treatment systems and the behavior of rigid wood frame connections.
- The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department is a leader in materials research and international sustainability.
- You’ll succeed with help from the Civil and Environmental Student Success Center.
- You can get involved in the International Senior Design Program.
- Take part in the Railroad Engineering Program by studying abroad in Finland.
- Our Center for Structural Durability includes renovated space where you can conduct research on ultra high performance concrete (Michigan Tech is the only facility in the nation equipped to do this!).
As a civil engineer, you can also get involved in the Pavement Design, Construction, and Materials Enterprise. This enterprise team mimics a full service pavement design, construction, and materials firm where students occupy roles as they would in a real life company.
