If you have an interest in biology and a curiosity about how individual organisms function and interact with other living things and the environment, the biological sciences degree program at Michigan Tech is an ideal fit for you. You can choose from a variety of concentrations depending on what you’re interested in.
You’ll get to do a lot of hands-on research, both in the department’s laboratories and outdoors. Michigan Tech even owns it’s own research boat, so you’ll never have a “typical” day in class as a biological sciences major!
As a biological sciences major you can concentrate in:
- General biology
- Pre-health professions
- Teacher education
But before you get ready to plunge into your biological sciences career, here are a few things you should know about the program…
- Research projects may be taken for course credit in your junior and senior years.
- Undergraduate research topics cover fundamental molecular biology & biochemistry, microbiology, plant sciences, and ecology.
- You’ll get free help on your assignments or work for the Biological Sciences Learning Center.
- You’ll get to use current technology in labs such as DNA analysis, electron microscopy, various chromatographies, and take field trips on and around Lake Superior.
- If you’re admitted to the Honors Program in Biological Sciences, you’ll perform an Honors Research Project.
- If you’re interested in teaching, you can work with faculty for credit and assist in courses as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant.
- We’ve upgraded the DNA sequencer, metabolic cart, lake water distribution system, and have new microscopes.
You’ll get to take part in a lot of research opportunities as a biological sciences major at Michigan Tech, and many students continue to do research after graduation in the pharmaceutical industry, hospitals, and the government sector such as the police, FBI, and Peace Corps. Graduates have also gone on to health care product manufacturing, quality assurance consulting, environmental consulting, and teaching. Whatever you’re passionate about, there’s an option to focus on in the biological sciences program.
