Bioinformatics

You’re curious about the molecular make-up of biological organisms. You’re strengths are in math and quantitative sciences. You also love to use computers for analysis. You have a knack for research. You should be a bioinformatics major at Michigan Tech.

Bioinformatics is the fusion of biology and computing. Computational analysis is used to interpret the vast information provided by modern molecular biology. You’ll have an equal emphasis on computation and structure, as well as genetics (molecular biology). Isn’t it great to know that all of your strengths and interests can be combined in one degree?

But before you get ready to plunge into your bioinformatics career, here are a few things you should know about the program…

  • The department has a new upgraded DNA sequencer and new microscopes.
  • You’ll get to work on projects in gene analysis from several biological systems in the areas of biological sciences and forestry.
  • The bioinfomatics program recently received grant support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
  • Internships are available with the National Science Foundation’s Research Experience for Undergraduates program.
  • You can get free help on your assignments or work for the Biological Sciences Learning Center.

As a bioinformatics major, you’ll always be at the top of your game. You’ll use classroom theory and discussions to apply applications in your labs and research. Many bioinformatics graduates have gone on to work in pharmaceuticals, forensics, and with government agencies including the CDC, FBI, and NIH. Many other graduates have gone on to attend medical or graduate school, and one has even started his own business! With bioinformatics, you’ll be able to read all the signs on the road to success.
