Biochemistry and molecular biology research is advancing rapidly. That’s why it’s critical to have a biochemistry and molecular biology program with access to the latest technology at Michigan Tech. If you want a strong basis in quantitative and physical sciences, and love to do hands-on research, then this is the major for you.
You’ll be prepared for technical and research positions in industry, particularly in biomedical, pharmaceutical and agricultural sciences, and for advanced study in biochemistry, molecular biology, or the health sciences.
You’ll be focusing on a wide variety of topics which can be studied from the perspective of molecular concepts that are applied to biological systems, or from the cellular biochemical process perspective progressing down to the molecular scale.
The biochemistry and molecular biology major at Michigan Tech is a collaboration between our chemistry and biology departments. In fact, you’ll focus your degree on either chemistry or biology concepts.
And before you get ready to plunge into your biochemistry and molecular biology career, here are a few things you should know about the program…- You’ll get to do use current technology in hands-on labs for DNA, RNA and protein analysis, gene cloning and transformation, and various chromatographies.
- The department has a new upgraded DNA sequencer, metabolic cart, lake water distribution system, and new microscopes.
- You can get free help on your assignments or work for the Biological Sciences Learning Center and the Chemistry Learning Center.
- You’ll participate in research—for credit—during your junior and senior years.
If you’re wondering what you would do with a biochemistry and molecular biology degree, our alumni can show you. They are working as executives in Fortune 500 companies, as entrepreneurs and attorneys, and as health care professionals. Graduates often pursue positions in pharmaceuticals, work in instrumentation, teaching, natural resource analysis, and many other professions. Your degree in biochemistry and molecular biology could literally take you anywhere!
