Anthropology majors at Michigan Tech “know their stuff” because they are passionate about research. Many students have participated in research on the early history of mining, history of the automobile, historic preservation projects, and various archaeological projects around the world. With all of the different research opportunities, you never know what you’ll discover!
Interested in graduate work and/or a career in archaeology? You’ll begin by earning an undergraduate degree in anthropology.
As an anthropology major you can concentrate in:
- Archaeology
- Environmental Anthropology (examining the relationship between humans and their environments)
And before you get ready to plunge into your anthropology career, here are a few things you should know about the program…
- As an anthropology major, you can participate in the annual Field School in Industrial Archeology, which for the past five years has taken place at the site of the 19th century’s West Point Foundry in Cold Spring, NY.
- The anthropology curriculum is designed to be flexible to fit your interests.
- The anthropology department is the home of the leading journal in industrial archaeology, The Journal of the Society for Industrial Archaeology.
- You’ll have access to a well-equipped archaeology lab that gives students experience in the processing and classification of artifacts and includes facilities for electrolytic artifact cleaning and a high-temperature kiln.
- You’ll get to use a variety of equipment for surveying field sites, including a “total station.”
With an undergraduate degree in anthropology, you’ll find work in a wide range of growing fields, including positions at nonprofit and governmental agencies, and jobs in teaching, social work, and business. Who says you can’t make your dreams come true?
