Co-ops and Internships

A big reason so many of our graduates are offered outstanding positions immediately upon graduating is the amount of meaningful hands-on work they complete as students. At the heart of that experience are co-ops and internships.

We’re not playing around. Each year more than 2,000 of the nation’s leading companies, corporations, and organizations seek our students out for meaningful positions over the course of a semester or summer.

Each year more than 500 undergraduate and graduate students go to work across the U.S., Europe, and Asia and gain unparalleled experiences and serious professional connections.

What Are Internships and Co-ops?
An internship is a learning experience that typically takes place over the summer months. Students usually are paid for their work in an internship, and gain invaluable “on the job” experience in a position directly related to the field they’re looking to one day enter. Internships usually don’t award academic credit.

A co-op is a joint venture among Michigan Tech, a selected employer, and you. By participating in a co-op you will earn both a paycheck and academic credit, as well as the inside track to a full-time position once you graduate. Here are just a few examples of what our students have done on their co-op experiences…

  • A mechanical engineering student redesigned a manufacturing plant layout for a major automotive supplier, saving the employer more than $300,000.
  • Marketing students evaluated businesses, developed surveys, conducted market research, and created business plans to expand and improve local and national businesses.
  • A biomedical engineering student designed and fabricated learning devices for physically handicapped skiers at a ski camp.
