So, you've found the page where we're supposed to write a lot of great text that tells you what to expect when you go to college and what life is like at Michigan Tech. But who wants to read a bunch of advice that sounds like something your family would say. Instead, we thought our current students would do a much better job filling you in. And we figure you’re more likely to believe what they have to say.
Try new things. There are lots of activities to do in college, student organizations to join, and people to meet. Get involved right away and enjoy everything Michigan Tech has to offer.

College is extremely rewarding and at the same time, very challenging. You should expect that you have to spend more time studying and learning the material which makes time management crucial.

I'd say one of the best things about Tech is the closeness in the community. I love that everyone is so friendly and welcoming. Also, don't worry so much about distance because when you come to Tech you gain a new family. And if you are afraid that Tech is too small or secluded, I know the feeling—I come from outside of Chicago and was used to everything being available. That was probably the biggest change I had to adjust to. But now my friends just call me a "suburban yooper!"

High school might have been easy but remember this isn’t high school. Stay on task and don’t fall behind.

Take advantage of opportunities like study abroad, Enterprise, or our co-op/internship programs. The more experience you gain, the more well-rounded you’ll be when it comes time to find a full-time job. Companies who recruit here look for students who have a variety of experiences because their resumes stand out from others.

When you get to college drop everything you thought you knew about college, drop all the stigmas and stereotypes and expectations and just experience it. Open yourself up completely. You get a fresh slate and you can take advantage of it. Everyone can excel in college if they put effort in. The biggest thing is be smart. Have your fun, but also remember that you are here for school. There is a lot of freedom away from home, but the only way you can experience it is if you stay in school. Too much fun can send you back home in a hurry.

Do not install World of Warcraft on your computer, or any games. You’ll miss the real world if you’re glued to your computer. Bicycles are great – until Thanksgiving.

College is a time of growing up. Adjusting to living on your own can be hard at first. I had a realization three weeks into my first year that there was no one here to tell me to go to class, or to do my homework. I was in charge of doing my own laundry, paying bills, and spending time with friends. I have grown so much in my time at Michigan Tech and now feel like I’ll be able to go into the real world and be successful with whatever I do.

When it’s time to do laundry, quarters magically disappear. If you gather some up before the year begins it'll help.
