Financial Aid Procedure

The financial aid process begins when you’ve been accepted to Michigan Tech.  Once you’re accepted, your application for admission serves as your application for the majority of merit-based scholarships.

For all other financial aid (need-based scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study employment), you’ll also need to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and have the results released to Michigan Tech.

Here’s a timeline to help you stay on track:

September
1 - Get serious about your college plans.  Start by applying for admission free online

Check your high school guidance office for local scholarship opportunities.

Use free online scholarship searches such as www.fastweb.com to research other scholarships you may qualify for.  (Please note that legitimate scholarships do not require an application fee.  Find more warning signs at www.finaid.org.)

October
15 - If you’re a Michigan resident and a senior in high school, you’ll want to apply for the Michigan Tech Leading Scholars Program scholarship.  It’s an opportunity you don’t want to miss.

January
1 – Begin to complete your FAFSA.  You’ll need your federal income tax info for last year and Michigan Tech’s Federal School Code: 002292.  You and your parent will also need to apply for a PIN in order to submit the results electronically.

15 – Priority date for admissions and automatic consideration for scholarships.

March
1 – Deadline for filing your FAFSA.
Financial aid packages are prepared and students are notified this month.

May
