Future First-Year FAQs

We like questions. And we’re pretty sure you’ve got at least a few at this point. So here are answers to some of the more common questions we get from students who are in the same boat as you are…

What are the admission requirements?
Requirements vary for each academic program. But the main factors considered for admission include cumulative GPA, class rank (if available), ACT and/or SAT scores, and high school classes taken and grades received. Each application is reviewed on an individual basis by our admissions committee.

What are the average GPA and test scores of freshmen in a typical year?
The average GPA of our incoming freshmen is 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. The average composite ACT score for incoming freshmen is 25.6, and the average SAT score is 1,718.

What courses should I take in high school?
We’d like you to have completed four years of mathematics, three years of natural science, four years of English, three years of social studies, and one year of computer literacy. A foreign language isn’t required, but two years is a good idea.

When’s the best time to apply for admission?
Priority consideration for admission, financial aid, and scholarships is given to students who apply by January 15 of the year you plan to enroll.

What needs to be included in my application packet?
You’ll need to submit an application for admission, the High School Counselor Information Page, official high school (or college) transcripts, and official ACT or SAT scores.

Will I have to live on campus?
All first-year students are required to live on campus for their first year. But “required” isn’t the best word to use, because once you get here, you’ll love it. In fact, many students choose to live on campus for more than one year.

What kind of financial aid and scholarships do you offer?
About 87 percent of all Michigan Tech students receive financial assistance, totaling more than $49 million every year. They get scholarships (free money), grants (free money), student loans (which is paid back after you graduate), and part-time employment. There are literally hundreds of scholarships from Michigan Tech and outside sources that you can apply for.

How will AP, IB, and CLEP credits be applied at Michigan Tech?
Michigan Tech will grant credit free of charge for AP, IB, and CLEP programs based on scores earned on the examinations. You must have your official scores sent directly to Michigan Tech from the appropriate testing agency.
