Tips From Current Students

If you're going to do serious research about a college, you need to seek the advice of current students.  After all, they were in your shoes just a few years ago.  And believe us, they'll dish out advice any chance they get!

After you've been accepted to Michigan Tech, fill out and return all of the paperwork as soon as possible, especially housing forms. Housing is first-come, first-serve, so if you want to live somewhere specific, it's best to get your paperwork in as soon as you can.  Also, take a campus tour as soon as possible, because then you really do have a better idea of what college will be like, where you will be living, and the kinds of activities you can get involved with when you're here.

Don't be afraid to ask for help.  Go to office hours that your professors hold.  Get involved with a student organization…there are plenty to choose from.

Take some time out of every day to do something you enjoy, it can be anything from working out, skiing, going to the movies, or reading (for pleasure). It will help you to relax and to not stress out over your classes. And you will always have something to look forward to.

Be prepared to not succeed at everything, such as classes. Especially if you did really well in high school, it's a huge shock the first time you don't do as well in a class or on a final.

When choosing a school you need to look at not only what you’re interested in, but also what you may be interested in…many people switch majors while in college or are still undecided when they show up.

Don't be afraid to talk to people.  If you want to be involved, you have to take the initiative.  If you want to do research, you have to ask professors if they have openings.  If you want to start an underwater basket weaving club, you have to talk to people, and find out who else is interested.  Don't just wait for the college experience to pass you by!

Find people that you can study with for a subject because the more brains you have to figure out a difficult problem, the better. You don't have to become best friends with your roommate, but you don't have to be a jerk. As long as you treat each other with respect (and most importantly respect their belongings) you shouldn't have many problems.
