Tips From Current Students

If you're going to do serious research about a college, you need to seek the advice of current students.  After all, they were in your shoes just a few years ago.  And believe us, they'll dish out advice any chance they get!

After you've been accepted to Michigan Tech, fill out and return all of the paperwork as soon as possible, especially housing forms. Housing is first-come, first-serve, so if you want to live somewhere specific, it's best to get your paperwork in as soon as you can.  Also, take a campus tour as soon as possible, because then you really do have a better idea of what college will be like, where you will be living, and the kinds of activities you can get involved with when you're here.

Don't be afraid to ask for help.  Go to office hours that your professors hold.  Get involved with a student organization…there are plenty to choose from.

Alexandra, 3rd year student

Choose a college that feels right. When you visit take note of the atmosphere and whether you're relaxed, tense, or feel at home. You are going to be here for 4-5 years so make sure you're comfortable.

Be prepared to work hard, but also be prepared to embark on the experience of a lifetime. To further your college experience, I recommend living in the residence halls even if your family lives close to campus.  Living in the residence halls helps you to meet new people easily and makes you feel like you belong.

When choosing a school you need to look at not only what you’re interested in, but also what you may be interested in…many people switch majors while in college or are still undecided when they show up.

Don't be afraid to talk to people.  If you want to be involved, you have to take the initiative.  If you want to do research, you have to ask professors if they have openings.  If you want to start an underwater basket weaving club, you have to talk to people, and find out who else is interested.  Don't just wait for the college experience to pass you by!

For your major, do what you enjoy.  It took me three years to figure out that I was in the wrong major.  Almost instantly I was happier and my grades improved after I had switched.  Also, Professors are here to teach you to learn, not to hold your hand.  Go to class!
