Checklist

Congratulations on being accepted to Michigan Tech!
Over the next several months, there will be a lot of information—important information—heading your way from all of the schools you’ve been accepted to.  To help you out, here’s a month-by-month checklist to make your transition to Tech a little easier.

Shortly after your acceptance:

September

  • Attend Open House on September 25, 2010…it’s a great time to visit campus, take a tour, and get familiar with Tech.  If you can’t make it to Open House, plan a traditional campus visit—tours are offered every weekday.
  • Apply for the Leading Scholar Award - applications are due October 15.

October – December

  • Applications are due October 15 for the Leading Scholar Award.
  • Research local and community scholarships you qualify for.  Many applications are due by the end of December.

January

  • Begin filling out your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)—you can start after January 1.  Be sure to list Michigan Tech as a recipient of your information—our federal school code is 002292.
  • Merit-based scholarships are awarded in mid- to late-January.  If you receive a scholarship, you’ll get a letter in the mail.

February

  • Search for a roommate using our online Roommate Matching Program, but you’ll need to submit your residence hall application and contract first.

March

  • Complete your FAFSA – it’s due March 1.
  • Take the online Math Diagnostic Test if you’d like to challenge your math placement.
  • Review information in The Tech Guide – you’ll get a copy if you’ve paid your enrollment deposit.
  • Attend Preview Day on March 27, 2010—it’s a day just for accepted students and their families.
  • Financial Aid awards are announced to students who completed the FAFSA by March 1—check your Husky Hub for details. 
  • Continue to check your HuskyMail email for updates from campus.

April

  • Submit your residence hall application and contract if you haven’t already.
  • Register for classes online—non-engineering majors only. If you’re majoring in engineering, your schedule will be prepared for you and emailed to you in July.
  • Keep an eye on the Husky Hub for any updates to your financial aid award, new email, or changes to your online checklist.
  • Register for the online modern language placement test—it’s not required, but is a great way to earn language credits which you can apply to a minor.  Details are in The Tech Guide.

May

  • May 1 is the last day to pay your enrollment deposit.
  • May 1 is the last day to request a roommate through roommate matching if you're living in a learning community.
  • Take AP test(s) and have your score(s) sent to Michigan Tech—our code is 1464.
  • Request your roommate through the online Roommate Matching Program.

June

  • June 1 is the last day to request a roommate through roommate matching.
  • Apply for alternative loans if necessary—get in touch with the Financial Aid office at 888-688-1885 or email finaid@mtu.edu if you have questions.
  • Register your vehicle online so you’ll have your parking sticker in your orientation check-in packet.
  • Register for the online modern language placement test—it’s not required, but is a great way to earn language credits which you can apply to a minor.  Details are in The Tech Guide.

July

  • Review Orientation information—don’t forget to share this with your family.
  • Purchase and read the summer “Reading as Inquiry” book—the title will be in your Orientation information.
  • Complete the credit card authorization form for the Campus Bookstore if you'll be using a credit card not issued in your name.
  • Prepare for orientation
    • Make hotel reservations for your family—rooms will fill quickly, plan ahead.
    • Order family picnic tickets—details are in your Orientation information.
    • Make reservations for an Orientation trip—totally optional, but a great time!
  • Check your Husky Hub and HuskyMail for details about your fall billing statement—the payment is due by August 26, 2009.

August

  • Check your Husky Hub and home mail for details about your residence hall assignment and roommate contact information.
  • Contact your roommate(s), get to know each other, and talk about what each person is bringing for your room.
  • Check on cell phone service—Alltel and AT&T are local providers, but many national plans work great in the area.
  • Research local banks and open accounts if necessary.
  • Check on student health insurance—Tech offers plans if you’re not covered by your family plan.
  • Pay your fall bill—remember, it’s due August 26.
  • Pack your stuff—see the online list for guidelines.
  • Attend Orientation week—August 23-28, 2009.
  • Get your books—order online or shop in person at the Campus Store.
  • Apply for an on-campus job if necessary—watch for postings when you get to campus.
